About SAWIS
The Scientific Association for Water Information and Sustainability (SAWIS) is a non-profit cultural and scientific organization established in May 2014 by young researchers specializing in hydroinformatics and geomatics. It operates under Moroccan law, specifically Dahir No. 1-58-316 of November 15, 1958, as amended by Dahir No. 1-75-283 of April 10, 1973.
SAWIS serves as a collaborative platform for researchers, professionals, and stakeholders working in the field of water information systems and geospatial technologies. The association's mission is to contribute to knowledge sharing, research coordination, and the development of solutions related to the sustainable management of water resources.
Key Activities
- Organizing and participating in national and international conferences, workshops, and scientific events, including technical visits, exhibitions, and social outreach.
- Conducting and coordinating research at national and international levels, particularly in the fields of water resources, GIS, remote sensing, and digital cartography, through the creation of technical committees and working groups.
- Disseminating research results, reports, and proceedings from seminars and conferences via SAWIS's communication channels and publications.
- Training and capacity building through hands-on workshops on data collection, geospatial analysis, and open data publication tools (e.g., QGIS, PostGIS, GeoServer, GeoNetwork).
Notable Events
- GEOIT4W-2020 Conference: In 2020, SAWIS co-organized the GEOIT4W-2020 conference, focusing on Geographic Information Technology for Water Resources. The proceedings from this conference were published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) (ACM Digital Library), providing a platform for researchers to present their findings on the application of computing technologies in water resource management.
- 6th International Conference on GIS and Applied Computing for Water Resources (WMAD21): Held on September 24–25, 2021, at the National School of Applied Sciences (ENSA) in Kenitra, Morocco, this conference gathered experts to discuss advancements in water management, applied computing, and data science. The proceedings were published in the E3S Web of Conferences, offering open access to the research presented.
- Publication of Conference Proceedings Book: Selected papers from the 4th International Conference GIRE3D on Participatory and Integrated Management of Water Resources in Arid Zones and 6th International Conference on GIS and Applied Computing for Water Resources (WMAD21) were compiled into a book titled "GIS, Applied Computing and Data Science for Water Management", published by Springer in August 2024. This volume is part of the prestigious Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography series, which is indexed in major databases including SCOPUS, DBLP, and EI Compendex. The book features cutting-edge research on:
- Machine Learning applications for water resources
- Computational techniques and data science methods for water management
- GIS applications for water resources and hydrological modeling
- Assessment of water resources and groundwater in Morocco
Outreach and Collaboration
SAWIS facilitates ongoing interaction among its members through official online platforms and social media groups, fostering networking, project collaboration, and interdisciplinary dialogue on water-related challenges in Morocco and beyond.
